The Electrified Double Tracking Railway project is a 329-km northern railway project that integrates with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s main line from Ipoh to Johor Bahru. It is the largest infrastructure project in Malaysian history.

When completed in 2013, the entire electrified dual tracks will stretch 968-km from south to north of Peninsular Malaysia.

The project is carried out by MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd, is a 50:50 joint venture company between MMC and Gamuda Berhad. The project involves the construction of infrastructure works, track and system works on a 5-year Design and Build Contract.

The benefits of the electrified double tracking railway project are immense. Once completed in 2013, this project is expected to transform Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s services, allowing it to compete in terms of travel time, frequency, reliability, quality of service and safety, as well as reduce the country’s heavy reliance on road transportation.

In addition, the spin-offs to local services and industries will have multiplier effects that will greatly stimulate the economy, especially in the 4 northern states of Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.
