Although being a responsible corporate citizen means maximizing shareholder value and running a profitable business, MMC is also committed to investing for the future. Throughout the companies within the MMC Group, corporate social responsibility (“CSR”) is approached holistically. Our commitment to CSR is based on the thrusts of education and community development, the environment and workplace development. We work to align the objectives of our business with that of society and the world around us.

Education and community development

The MMC Group is committed to creating education improvement around the country. Indeed, we strive to make education a part of MMC’s culture, and are pleased to work together with numerous government and non-governmental organizations in giving back to society.

We believe that everyone should have access to quality education. We are involved in the development of the Albukhary International University, a non-profit university catered for the poor and less privileged. We are actively involved in adopting schools, sponsorship of books and supplies to underequipped schools and disadvantaged students, organising annual motivations camps and other endeavours towards elevating education for our young as the country progresses into a knowledge economy.

Within the MMC family, too, the children of staff who have excelled in their studies are given recognition through the “Anugerah Pelajar Cemerlang” program.

We also continuously engage in humanitarian and community projects as part of CSR. For example, for the year in review, the Group had organised blood donation campaigns, fund-raising sporting events, gotong-royong and other charitable activities.

Environment

MMC also commits itself to good environmental practices in its businesses. We recognise that our activities must be carried out responsibly due to the fragile ecosystems in certain areas where we operate.

Within the Group, health, safety and environment (“HSE”) initiatives are an integral part of our operations. Structured HSE programmes undertaken encompass all elements in operations and involve employee engagement at all levels. Stringent pollution monitoring and waste management practices are also imposed and strictly adhered to in our subsidiaries.

Besides ensuring that we operate in accordance with the highest environmental standards, we also take proactive steps to increase awareness toward environmental conservation within the local communities impacted by our presence.

For example, environmental awareness campaigns such as the Malakoff Mangrove Initiative and Energy Efficiency Lecture Series and PTP’s “Caring for the Wetlands” campaign were successfully carried out.

Human Capital Development

A strong company requires not only skilled but driven, motivated and loyal employees. Attention is given to the professional and personal development of members of the MMC family to nurture a culture of hard work, discipline and creativity. Comprehensive training in terms of functional and soft skills are continuously rolled out within the Group along with the provision of educational loans for staff intending to further their education. We are also committed to developing a pool of talent that can be nurtured into the Group’s future leaders, in tandem with our objective to create human capital providing service excellence to stakeholders and to be a preferred employer.

Teambuilding and leadership training are widely implemented throughout the Group to foster greater cooperation and understanding between staff and instilling of MMC’s core values of Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork, Excellence and Commitment.
